Hemp Textile Finishing
report_problem Problem Statement
Hemp is the fastest-growing natural fibre in sustainable fashion, driven by brands like Patagonia, Levi's, Tentree, and H&M. Hemp fabric is notoriously stiff and wrinkle-prone — properties that limit consumer adoption. The entire industry has solved this problem by blending: hemp-cotton (55/45), hemp-TENCEL, hemp-recycled polyester. Nobody blends because it's ideal; they blend because no finishing chemistry exists for hemp fabric specifically. CAGE's amino acid + polycarboxylic acid system would be the first purpose-built hemp finishing chemistry — entering a market with zero direct chemistry competitors and a customer base (sustainable fashion brands) that is pre-disposed to food-grade, non-toxic inputs.
trending_up Market Size
$3.3B hemp clothing market (9.8% CAGR to 2030). $21-29B broader hemp fibre market by broader estimates. Patagonia, Levi's, H&M, Tentree, MEC all actively sourcing hemp.
gavel Regulatory Drivers
No regulatory forcing function — the value proposition is performance, not compliance. However, the same EU REACH Aug 2026 formaldehyde restriction would apply to any hemp finishing using DMDHEU (currently not common). Primary driver: brand demand for clean chemistry aligned with hemp's sustainability narrative.

flag Success Criteria
Wrinkle recovery angle ≥250° (warp + fill) on hemp substrate. Performance maintained after 5 wash cycles. Tensile strength retention ≥65% vs untreated. Hand-feel improvement vs undegummed hemp. Characterise performance vs degumming quality — establish minimum degumming spec for consistent crosslinking.
precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed
Padding mangle, forced-air oven, AATCC 66 tester, analytical balance, pectinase enzyme, 100% degummed hemp fabric (various degumming quality grades)
